We were delighted that Sim and Abi came back to enjoy SHS Arts Fest at the end of their first year of university. Not only was it wonderful to see them but they very kindly agreed to share their thoughts on their first year post-SHS!
Simran Jassel – Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts
I am studying Management for the Creative Industries and Performing Arts. my first year has flown by. My highlights include setting up my own promotion company and meeting ABBA’s Bjorn.
I specialise in music and live events. My first year has included modules in finance, law, marketing as well as practical projects to develop critical skills as a manager. My favourite part of the course has been being assessed on practical work as I am not someone who excels in exams. I am assessed through individual and group project work, business presentations and writing essays and reports. This works perfect for me as it showcases my strengths.
One thing I would like students to take from my experience is that you can still go to university and achieve high grades, even if you’re not someone who is great at exams. Find your strengths and then find a university course to compliment them.
Abigail Kulemeka – University of Sheffield
I have just finished my first year of studying Music and Korean Studies at the University of Sheffield.
In my first year I’ve been able to attend multiple performance and composition masterclasses, as well as translation workshops for newly released Korean literature. I mention this instead of course content because I think it’s incredible just how many more opportunities have opened up just by moving to the city!
I am also really happy to be able to engage with just as many extra-curricular activities as I had during my time at SHS, being a part of Sheffield University Symphony Orchestra and the newly appointed Secretary of Sheffield Dance Society. Being able to join these societies has led to me meeting so many amazing people that I wouldn’t have otherwise (including Karen Hauer from Strictly Come Dancing!)
I applied to UoS only 2 days before the application deadline purely on a whim, not knowing exactly what to do post A-levels. Ultimately, I’ve never been happier so my advice to anyone stuck or stressed about life beyond SHS is just to go with your gut! At the end of the day, only you know what you truly want for yourself.
