Inspirational Teaching
At Shrewsbury High we pride ourselves on knowing each and every pupil. With small tutor groups our tutors and class teachers can really get to know the young people in their care and respond to their individual needs.
We understand how girls prefer to learn, providing hour long lessons, to encourage the deep learning that suits girls’ preference for mastery and depth. Within those lessons we understand that girls need both more security and more challenge if they are to excel, we build up confidence so that girls actively participate in lessons, becoming more assertive within the classroom and gaining power in their own voice – we know that girls lose self-confidence more quickly and regain it less quickly than boys and so we need to encourage them to experiment, have a go, be brave, and not worry about always getting it right.
Collaboration and Teamwork
With a unique combination of academic rigour and a truly broad education, we will help your daughter to prepare for a future filled with promise. She will learn the skills to question, to work hard and to gain the emotional resilience to know her own worth. Our girls understand that they will face challenges in the co-ed world but unlike many of their co-ed counterparts they will not fall foul of the confidence gap because they are academically and mentally prepared for whatever field they choose.
A Tailored Curriculum
All new pupils entering into the school are assessed in order to build up their academic profile. We do this so that we can ensure that each and every pupil achieves their very best academically. By understanding an individual’s ability, their strengths and weaknesses, as well as any specific learning issues, we can provide an educational experience that suits every pupil.
Education designed for Girls
We have a forward-thinking approach to academic study which is original and relevant to the modern world. We want our girls to take ownership of their learning, think critically and develop the skills and the vision to problem-solve, now and in the future. Students have access to a wide selection of topics and are supported through their choice of GCSE and A level subjects aligning with their strengths and passions. Our teachers encourage their students to become inspired learners with inquisitive, original mindsets. As experts in their fields, they share their passion for their subjects to ensure every student is stretched and challenged, but also able to play to her strengths.

The SHS More Able and Talented Programme is designed to meet the learning needs of students of very high academic ability by providing a programme of enrichment from years 7-13.
The Scholars’ Programme aims to stretch and challenge our most academically able pupils so that they can maintain their enthusiasm for learning and engagement with studies.
We have the long-term goal of encouraging pupils to take greater ownership of their learning so that they may develop critical thinking skills beyond the requirements of GCSE and A-level. A key outcome will be the ability to combine critical reading, reflection and discussion so that girls will be better prepared for success at A-level, at university and in their chosen professors.

At Shrewsbury High School, we know that your child is an individual and each child has different needs. Where possible, all teachers endeavour to meet every pupil’s need within the classroom through excellent teaching and comprehensive departmental support. For many pupils, this is more than sufficient. For those pupils who need more targeted support, we have an experienced Learning Enhancement team.
If a child needs a more complex level of support, both the Junior and Senior School have qualified and experienced Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators (SENDCOs) who can better assist your family with organising the correct pathway for your child’s education. This can be discussed at an initial meeting prior to starting at our school with follow-up meetings planned throughout their time with us.
Communication is very important to us and we endeavour to create a partnership between parents, teaching and support staff, and the individual to ensure success. We pride ourselves on working closely with families and ensuring parents are given opportunities to discuss support plans regarding their child. Success depends on regular communication between home and school.
