Girls in years 7-13 have Curriculum Drama lessons as well as the chance to join a variety of co-curricular clubs offering them the opportunity to perform in a wide variety of productions.
Recent productions have included Oliver! and Noughts and Crosses, hugely contrasting pieces giving pupils the chance to experience range and depth of text and subject matter.
Girls wishing to take part in Drama productions are selected through a process of auditions and there is a an expectation of commitment from the cast of a Drama production as there are several rehearsals per week, one of which is compulsory.
The experience that Drama offers the girls at SHS is designed to encourage creativity, independence, commitment and resilience and to develop and maintain a passion for performance, theatre and drama that will extend well into adult life.
Birmingham Rep Satellite Theatre
Shrewsbury High School, in partnership with the Birmingham Rep offers a Satellite Youth Theatre every Wednesday after school. Over the course of the year pupils in year 9 and above are able to attend weekly workshops at the school with a Birmingham Rep director. They explore plays in the current Rep season, with performance showings every half term. This culminates in a performance on the main stage at The Rep in Birmingham in July. For those of our drama students who want to extend and develop their dramatic talents event further, this is a unique opportunity to bring the experience and excitement of the Birmingham Rep to the High School on a weekly basis allowing our girls to:
· Create and write their own scripts
· Act in performance pieces
· See live theatre at The Rep
· Work with like minded young people with a passion for drama
· Take part in work experience and backstage tours at the Rep
· Gain an insight into the world of professional theatre
· Explore the thematic topics and contemporary theatre making styles of the Rep’s current season of shows
A highlight on the school calendar and a favourite with pupils and parents alike, all senior girls are also able to join in with House Drama. This takes place once a year and is a chance for all girls to get involved and produce a play, led by and directed by Sixth Form House Captains. Girls can choose to audition for leading roles, or help with set design, music, costume or choreography, whatever takes their interest!
