Welcome to our Virtual Junior Open Day

We know that open days are an essential way for you and your child to get a feel for our school and although we cannot be welcoming you in person to our beautiful Junior site, we hope that this Virtual Open Day will still allow you to see, and hear, everything we have to offer your child here on Old Roman Road in the heart of Shrewsbury.

You can hear from our inspiring Junior School staff and wonderful pupils, find out about our creative curriculum and the co-curricular opportunities available – whatever it is that captivates your child, a world of possibility awaits.

If you have yet to arrange a live meeting today with our Headteacher, or one of our Heads of Key Stage, you can do so by emailing admissions@shr.gdst.net and we will call you back to arrange a convenient time.

A gentle transition from home to school…

Hear from Mr Ryan King, Head of Early Years and Key Stage 1 on our nurturing Nursery and Pre-Prep classes.

Mr Steve Blenkinsop, Head of Key Stage 2, was thrilled to welcome some of our school community back to school last week and it was a real community effort!  He explains how with a great team and a “can do” attitude, the school has been brought back to life once again.  Read his article here: Anything can be done! The wellbeing and pastoral care of all our pupils is at the heart of school life at Junior and Seniors. Find out more about what pastoral care looks like at SHS by reading through our wellbeing pages.  You can also hear from our Head of Learning Enhancement below.

All-through Education – Moving up to Shrewsbury High Senior School

Shrewsbury High Junior and Shrewsbury High Seniors are very much one school and although we have to let our boys go at the end of Year 8, we very much see our job as educators of our girls from 3-18 and we are experts in educating girls, having done so on Town Walls for over 100 years as part of the Girls’ Day School Trust.  Our Headteacher, Jo Sharrock welcomes you to the Senior School and you can read about the enormous benefits of an All-through Education.

A Creative Curriculum

Shrewsbury High Junior School’s Creative Curriculum celebrates skills-based teaching rather than content-focused delivery, making us different from your normal primary school!

In an ever-advancing world, employers see creativity as a vital attribute.  To be able to think creatively gives employers an indication that the candidate is able to problem solve, will show resilience in the face of setbacks, has the flexibility of mind to think quickly and be innovative.

Therefore, our teaching strategies and curriculum place the emphasis on ‘learning to learn’ and have creativity at its heart. Each term the pupils take a journey through a topic, this is the backbone to all of their lessons and is the contextualisation of their learning.

Art at Shrewsbury High Junior School

“Our belief is that working creatively from a young age will encourage a life long love of learning.”

Throughout the Junior School, our Art Department provides a stimulating environment to maximise the opportunities pupils have to flourish in their creativity and develop their self-esteem through confidence, value and pleasure in art. Projects are designed for pupils to foster a spirit of independent inquiry and to grow in confidence, imagination and creative thinking.

Outdoor Learning – A Captivating Learning Environment

Surrounded by enchanting woodland, the Junior school is the perfect environment for creating a sense of awe and wonder. The benefits of outdoor space go far beyond sport. Our natural outdoor environment provides the perfect backdrop for all of our pupils to learn and explore.

Our Early Years pupils are provided with a wonderful wealth of resources in which to develop the six key areas of learning. Our young children will dig, create, experiment, pour and test out their hypotheses using a variety of media, materials and tools.

The outdoor classroom is crucial in supporting children’s growing awareness of the need to care for the environment and to develop a sense of responsibility.

Find out more about outdoor learning at the junior school on the Outdoor Learning and Woodlands webpage and join our Year 6 pupils in their (rather speeded up) walk through the Junior School grounds as part of their orienteering session.

Sport for all!

In the sports’ department, headed up by Mr Paul Leeming, our philosophy is ‘Sport for All’ and we deliver a high quality inclusive curricular and co-curricular programme incorporating a wide range of sports for all pupils from pre- school to Year 8. We pride ourselves on our sporting ethos at Shrewsbury High Junior School and the sporting contribution to the well-being and health of our pupils.

Music & Drama

Opportunities abound equally for our musicians and dramatists who perform regularly in drama productions, concerts, solo and ensemble performances at school and on the wider stage. Whether it is the classical violin in the strings ensemble, the bass guitar in the school rock band, a leading role in the school play or dancing in the annual whole school dance production, there really is something for every pupil whatever their level and whatever their age as music is fully embedded into the life of all our pupils from Nursery to Year 8.

Coming together in times of hardship – Junior “The Climb” Performance

Prep pupils, staff and parents joined together to perform ‘The Climb’ earlier this term – although we have been apart this term, it hasn’t stopped us joining together virtually and this performance embodies the warmth and joy of our Junior community that makes our school so special.
