An Inspirational Setting - Shrewsbury High School

Our Nursery and Reception classes provide an inspirational setting for children to start their academic journey.

In Nursery and Reception, children build fundamental skills in readiness for the school years that lie ahead.  Our highly experienced Nursery staff appreciate that each child is unique, and so provide engaging activities which match with each stage of an individual child’s development.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) standards are at the heart of each day.  Understanding staff and and “open door” policy mean that parents can discuss any issues quickly and easily.

Tapestry is an easy to use, online learning journal where we record, track and celebrate children’s progress in Nursery and Reception, which is openly available for parents and carers to access. In addition to this programme both Nursery and Reception classes receive lessons in French, PE and Music, delivered by subject specialists.

In Reception, an enriched academic curriculum complements and completes the Early Years Foundation Stage and supports a smooth transition to Key Stage 1. We continue to use practical learning that extends beyond the classroom into our own mini woodland and, while the children attend Forest School each week whatever the weather. Forest School and Forest Skills sessions offers our pupils the chance to learn, explore and build a lasting relationship with nature.  It is a fantastic way for young children to learn team building skills and take calculated risks.

Starting in Year 1 and extending up to Year 4, the Creative Curriculum is the lynchpin of the children’s learning experience. Using this approach our children are inspired by a topic which threads together their learning and the skills they acquire.
