Despite the speed at which the holidays have passed, it was lovely to welcome back our pupils and so many new families to Prep this week. Wednesday morning saw a sea of refreshed and eager faces, all excited to be sharing stories of summer adventures and catching up with old friends. Our first assembly of the year, inspired by goldfish (ask your sons and daughters!) focused on each and every individual in our school community being destined to make a difference in the world and having the courage to think big; I think, therefore, I am. Our mind-set really does dictate our reality and I very much hope that our pupils feel ready to take the plunge this year; to grab hold of the opportunities that come their way and have the courage seize them.

Mr Carter and Mr King

We said a sad farewell to Miss Wakeley and Mr Everington in July but we welcome new members of staff to our team this term. Mr Ryan King joins us as Head of EYFS and Key Stage 1 and has already made a huge impact in the Rocks with Pre-Prep. For those who have already seen it, I am sure you will agree that the new environment in the Rock’s atrium is both purposeful and inviting; the perfect backdrop for pupil-centred learning. Our curriculum for Nursery and beyond will develop around this throughout the year. We are also delighted to welcome Mr Graham Carter as our new co-ordinator of Modern Foreign Languages, teacher of French and Year 6 form tutor.

All of us at Prep are extremely excited about the year ahead and working with our whole school community throughout the coming months; adventure awaits….

Kate Millichamp,
Head of Prep

A Reminder of the School Day

To meet the needs of busy parents, our Prep School is open from 8.00am.  Nursery – Year 2 should be dropped off at the rocks and Years 3 – 8 at Kennedy Hall, where children are supervised until moving to their classrooms at 8.30am.  Most pupils are expected to arrive between 8.30am and 8.40am with registration taking place at 8.40am. Children go to their classrooms to register and begin set work before assembly, which is held between 8.50am and 9.05am three days a week.

Lessons for Nursery – Year 2 finish at 3.30pm, with lessons for Years 3-8 finishing at 3.45pm. At the end of the school day all children should be signed out from their last activity or usual pick up point.  All children using the school buses are checked off on a register, taken that morning, and escorted to the correct bus by staff.

For those pupils not leaving at the end of the school day, 4pm sees the start of an hour of co-curricular activities, including a wide variety of clubs, mostly free of charge and also Prep (homework club) for Years 3-8.

There is also further supervised care available from 5pm until 6pm in the Rocks for Nursery to Year 8, there is a charge and the cost of this is £6 for the hour, £1.50 per fifteen minutes.

The Rocks – A New Environment

Over the summer The Rocks building at the prep school has been refurbished with a fresh new look. The space has been enhanced to provide the children with a new, purposeful learning environment. It will provide the children with opportunities to be creative, think critically and problem solve. We are very excited about the new space and look forward to developing it even further in the near future!

Co-Curricular Programme Autumn 2019

Our Co-Curricular Programme for Autumn 2019 is now confirmed, and the details have been emailed to all parents. Children will be able to choose which clubs they would like to be involved in over the weekend, and then sign up with their Form teacher. Just a reminder that Cross Country is available for Years 3 – 8 on a Monday and Friday before school, please contact Mr Leeming for further details. Tennis is a paid activity, and if you wish your child to participate, the tennis coach is offering a free taster on Wednesday 11th September. We hope the children will be excited by the choice of activities on offer.

Meet the Teachers, Pastoral Evenings

Nursery – Year 2: Monday 9th September, 5-6.30pm in Kennedy Hall

Years 3 – 8: Thursday 12th September, 5-6.30pm in Kennedy Hall

We would be delighted if all parents could join us next week for our ‘Meet the Teachers Pastoral Evening’ which replaces the Induction Evening that used to take place in the summer term. The evening will serve to provide a wealth of information about the academic year ahead, as well as providing an opportunity for you to meet our team of staff and in particular, your child’s new form teacher. Both evenings will begin in Kennedy Hall, with refreshments also being served.

In the meantime, should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with your child’s form teacher in the first instance. It always takes a couple of weeks to settle into new routines and we ask that you do not worry over uniform and equipment that may not yet be purchased or labelled.

Year One Trip to Blists Hill Victorian Museum

On Friday 13th September Year One will be visiting Blists Hill to find out about life in Victorian times and materials used by the Victorians.

To help your child feel part of the experience please send them to school in Victorian costume. Please ensure that they are wearing comfortable shoes and have a cagoule, in their rucksack, just in case. Please also make sure that your child has sun protection, if you think it will be necessary, on the day.

We will be leaving school at 9.15am and returning before the end of the school day. If your child tends to be travel sick please come and speak to Miss James about any medication in advance of the visit day. The children will be provided with packed lunches by the school but if you would like your child to have an extra snack and drink (i.e. for breaktime) please provide this in a plastic bag.

There will be an opportunity to visit the shop so children may bring up to £5 in a named purse. This should be handed to Miss James on the day.

Pre-School Activities on Offer 5 Days a Week!

For the last four years, pre-school children and families have enjoyed jumping, climbing and balancing their way around the gym at Shrewsbury High Prep School in their weekly Gym Tots sessions.

Please ask Mr King or the Reception office for more details.

Now, with the new school term upon us, we are opening our doors five days a week with an exciting new Tots programme for children from 18 months – 3 years old.

Gym Tots will continue to run from 10-11am every Tuesday morning. Specialist PE staff from the school help guide children around the fully equipped gym with climbing frames, ropes and ladders, balance beams and spring boards.

Now, parents and pre-schoolers will also have the choice of Yoga Tots on a Monday, Art Tots on a Wednesday, Enviro Tots on a Thursday and Language Tots on a Friday – giving local parents an exciting new range of clubs and session times to choose from.

Yoga is already a popular after school club at Shrewsbury High Prep school and from September, form teacher and fully qualified Yoga instructor Hannah Gill will also be running regular yoga sessions for the nursery and reception children at the school as they are built into the Early Years’ timetable. Mrs Gill will be running the new Yoga Tots for pre-school children on a Monday from 9.30-10am in term time.

SIMS Parent app

All parents will have received an invitation to sign up to the new SIMS Parent app with full information about how to sign up and use the app.  You can also find the information documents at SIMS Parent app.  The SIMS Parent app will run alongside Firefly but we hope it will offer a much easier way of accessing pupil information.  Please note you do not need to fill in the appendix booklet – this is for reference only so you can see what you are consenting to.

We will be holding two open door sessions next week for anyone who would like help getting started with the app or for those experiencing any problems.

Monday 9th September – 8.45-10am – Old Library, Senior School

Tuesday 10th September – 8.45-10am – Kennedy Hall, Prep School

You can contact us at 01743 494 000 or email: with any queries relating to the app.

Shrewsbury High Prep School Council Elections

Voting for School Councillors will take place next week and in the first instance the children will have to nominate themselves.  The pupils will need to deliver a short speech to their forms, saying why they think they would make a good councillor.

Years 3 – 8 has a representative on the council, and Pre-Prep is represented by two pupils from Year Two.

An election will take place, with the first school council meeting of the school year taking place next Friday, 13th September.

Good School Councillors should have some of the following qualities:  be a good listener, trustworthy, happy, helpful, reliable, want to make changes, be able to set a good example, be confident, a good talker, caring, considerate, able to work in a team and have good ideas.

We look forward to another exciting year with our pupils representing their peers of Shrewsbury High Prep School.

Prep School Open Day

Our next Prep School Open Day takes place on Thursday 10th October from 9.30am – 3.00pm.  This is a wonderful way to find out all about what the school has to offer, speak to our Head and teachers and see the school in action.  Please share the date with any friends or family you think might be interested.  For more information, please email our Admissions team at or register at Open Days

Reminder to Parents from the School Nurse

Please can I remind all parents that we aim to be a nut/sesame free environment at Shrewsbury High School Prep to reduce the risk of anaphylaxis for those children with nut/sesame allergies. Please could you bear this in mind if you are sending your child into school with any snacks.

Please can I also ask parents to encourage their child/children to wash their hands regularly, to reduce the risk of cross infection.

Also as a precautionary measure, could we remind parents to help their children to check for head lice on a regular basis. Below is the NHS guidance for treatment if parents need advice.
