Friday 15th November

What an incredible Autumn Concert in Shrewsbury Abbey!

It was wonderful to see so many students present, from the very youngest in Reception to the oldest in Year 13, and we are so proud of all our young musicians who took the stage and shared their talent, hard work, and passion with us. Each note they played and each word they sang was a testament to hours of commitment and practice, and we couldn’t be prouder of their performance. Congratulations to all who participated – they brought the spirit of SHS to life and made it an unforgettable event. A huge thank you especially goes to Mr Bunn and Mrs Wills for creating such a magical occasion.

At every performance, we’re reminded of the profound impact music has on our students. Music isn’t just about learning to play an instrument or memorise a piece; it fosters teamwork, patience, and self-expression. Studies have shown that learning music helps with cognitive development, improves memory, and strengthens both creativity and discipline. These are invaluable life skills that will benefit our students far beyond the stage.

With the holiday season fast approaching, we’re already gearing up for our next set of performances: the Junior School pantomime, our annual Christmas Concerts and Services and of course, the much-anticipated 140th Carols Around the Tree. As always, these events will be filled with classic carols and festive favorites, and we can’t wait for our students to experience the joy of spreading holiday cheer through music. More details on dates and times will follow soon, so please keep an eye on your inbox.

As we continue our journey through this year’s events, we thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement.

An evening with ... Rev Kate Bottley!

“I want to make faith look possible – faith belongs to all of us”.

Such an uplifting evening on Tuesday with the absolutely fabulous Kate Bottley who joined us as the next speaker in our programme of inspirational woman speakers. Rev. Kate made us roar with laughter, brought us to tears, gave us so much to think about, and told us stories we can never repeat!

Some of the soundbites from the evening:

“Women should be each others cheerleaders. When we are strong together we are unstoppable.”

“A no is really loud, a yes is really quiet. That is why I like to say yes – a lot.”

She ended with the words of her “favourite theologian” Dolly Parton who said “Find out who you are and do it on purpose”.

Thank you for a truly inspirational evening, and look out for the next VERY exciting announcement soon…

German Exchange

SHS girls had a wonderful week in Weimar on the German Exchange in half term.  We experienced German school at our partner school Goethe Gymnasium and visited wonderful Erfurt and Leipzig. Lots of culture and art including action painting workshops, seeing the Bauhaus university and visiting some amazing art galleries. Our girls were fantastic: so friendly, interested, open and creative-great ambassadors for our school.

We even met up with former SHS student Rachel Williams, who is spending her year abroad in Leipzig, as part of her German and history degree at Edinburgh university.

Year 8 Visit to Carding Mill Valley

On Monday Year 8 travelled to Carding Mill Valley to complete a river study. The students worked in small groups to measure the velocity, width and bedload of the river to see how it changes downstream. The students behaved impeccably and gained a better understanding of the river processes they have studied in class.

In the afternoon the different groups went on an upland walk of Carding Mill Valley looking at the beautiful natural environment and having the opportunity to be taught about everything from iron age hill forts to the birds of prey that make the valley their home.

Our girls were a credit to the school and the National Trust staff were delighted with their enthusiasm and engagement during the day.
