Farewell to Miss Walters
We were saddened to hear the news that Glenys Walters, former SHS pupil and much loved and long-serving Head of the Junior School had recently passed away.
In the School Magazine from 1992, Miss Walters’ retirement was announced “Miss Walters, Head of the Junior Department, retired after almost an entire lifetime spent at SHS, as pupil, teacher and finally Head. She brought to the Junior Department her own unique blend of care, humour, commonsense and a deep affection for the school and all its pupils, past and present.”
There are unlikely to be many women who have spent quite so much time at Shrewsbury High. Miss Walters was a pupil here from 1943 – 1950 and returned to teach in the Junior School from 1958. In 1976 she became Head of the Junior School and retired in 1992. Key dates below@
Pupil at SHS from 1943 to 1950
Attended Homerton College, Cambridge from 1950 to 1952
Taught at Atcham C of E School from 1952 to 1957
Taught at SHS Juniors from 1958, became Head of Juniors in 1976 and retired in 1992.
Thank you to her family for sharing some wonderful photos with us and for SHS alumnae who have been sharing their memories on the Alumnae Facebook Group. At 92, she lived a long and happy life and we are grateful that so much of it was spent inspiring generations of girls at SHS.
