Hello, everyone. My name is Mr Deakin and I am the new Director of Music at SHS.
I am so excited to be joining you all this year, and to have the opportunity to build on the great work of Mrs P-D at a school with such a rich and amazing musical heritage. For those of you who haven’t met me yet, I have joined you this year from another branch of the GDST family: The Belvedere Academy in Liverpool, where I was Teacher of Music for five years and helped to get the Music Department shortlisted for ‘Best School Music Department’ at the Music Teacher Awards Ceremony in London in 2018 – a national award. We were honoured to be shortlisted again in 2019 for the second consecutive year and win on this occasion! This was the culmination of all the hard work of teachers and the extremely dedicated pupils in the department, who all believed in our vision to be the very best and gave so much to help make that happen.
In the process they created countless amazing memories through international tours, musical productions, concerts, huge public events throughout the city of Liverpool and many other opportunities which they will hopefully remember for the rest of their lives. This is precisely what I want to build for Music at SHS, and I hope that you will all help me over the coming weeks, months and years with that vision: putting our school on the map as a centre of musical excellence in the country.
To give you all a bit of an insight into my own musical background, I am a pianist by trade and I absolutely love to play everything from classical music to film and jazz, although my favourite composers have to be Beethoven and Rachmaninov. I started my own musical journey relatively late in life during my early teens, but as soon as I discovered the piano I knew that I had found my calling, and I worked tirelessly on my craft, eventually achieving Grade 8 Distinction a few years later. I then went on to study Music at The University of Huddersfield, graduating with First Class Honours in 2012, after majoring in Solo Performance and also studying Music History and Analysis.
I love to conduct and arrange beautiful and exciting music for young people to play, hopefully inspiring that same love for music I first felt at around the same age. I believe that an outstanding music department should be one huge, supportive community; a place where pupils feel welcome and come to express themselves through a wide range of exciting enrichments which we can create together. I am really looking forward to getting to know you all and to making some amazing music and memories together. I believe there are lots of very exciting times ahead for Music at SHS.
