At Shrewsbury High School, we understand that your daughter doesn’t just learn in the classroom. She also learns in the playground, on the playing field, in the DT workshop, den building in the woodland or performing on the stage.
That’s why your daughter will find clubs covering all manner of subjects on offer in our Junior School and we encourage all our pupils to try something new every term. Maybe they’ll join the orchestra or rock band? Maybe she’ll try yoga or cricket or it’s the Harry Potter club that captures her imagination.
In the sports’ department our philosophy is ‘Sport for All’ and we deliver a high quality inclusive curricular and co-curricular programme incorporating a wide range of sports for all pupils. We pride ourselves on our sporting ethos at Shrewsbury High School and the sporting contribution to the well-being and health of our pupils. Cross country running, swimming, athletics, tennis, and gymnastics complement the team sports of hockey, netball, rounders, cricket and football to ensure a broad and balanced curriculum. A series of house competitions underpins our philosophy to involve every pupil. Specialist teachers, committed staff and a team of sports coaches provide excellent coaching ensuring maximum involvement, progress and success all our pupils.
Residential trips to local venues and beyond provide all pupils with the opportunity to enjoy outdoor and adventurous activities, developing team building and problem solving skills and overcoming fears as they are presented with challenges that place them out of their comfort zones.
Opportunities abound equally for our musicians and dramatists who perform regularly in drama productions, concerts, solo and ensemble performances at school and on the wider stage. Whether it is the classical violin in the strings ensemble, the bass guitar in the school rock band, a leading role in the school play or dancing in the annual whole school dance production, there really is something for every pupil whatever their level and whatever their age as music is fully embedded into the life of all our pupils.
Our “Every Child learns” initiative in the junior school, led by Director of Music Mr Bunn, means all Junior pupils will have the opportunity to learn a variety of orchestral instruments over the course of their time in Juniors. Pupils are given a trumpet, violin or clarinet, depending on their year group to keep at home for half a term. They learn technical skills, ensemble skills and key performance skills leading up to an informal showcase concert for their parents and hopefully a life long love of music and perrformance.
Throughout the year we build in activities beyond the curriculum that give all our pupils the chance to work together to discover new passions and interests – a whole school art day, joining in with the global Big Draw event, the annual dance production in collaboration with the senior school, enrichment days where we try our hand at rowing, pizza oven making, working with nature, Duke of Edinburgh skills, kite making and more.
Whatever it is that captivates your daughter, a world of possibility awaits.
