Shropshire's only all-through, all-girls' school.

I am extremely proud to be the 13th Head of this wonderful school. In 1872 the founders of the Girls' Day School Trust embarked on a mission that would change the course of girls' education forever, making a first-class education available to as many girls as possible. When Shrewsbury High School opened in 1885, that opportunity was extended to the girls of Shropshire.

This mission has burned bright ever since and is reflected in the ambition and innovation in our school today.

We are experts in girls’ education and we are here to provide the best education for the girls in our school.  We are a member of the Girls’ Day School Trust, the GDST – 26 girls’ schools, 20,000 girls, 4,000 staff and over 100,000 alumnae.  Through the GDST, the opportunities that exist are phenomenal – from sports competitions, space tech initiatives, access to thousands of GDST alumnae, and leadership opportunities.  We all unite under one common goal – to be environments where Girls Learn Without Limits.

There is strong evidence that a girls-only education leads to higher academic achievement, greater diversity of subjects choice, stronger self-confidence and resilience, and enhanced career progression. We are incredibly proud that our curriculum and our co-curricular programmes, provide Shrewsbury High School girls with the very best opportunities to be the best versions of themselves so that they leave us, fully equipped to lead happy and successful lives.

Whilst our website can offer some insight into life at SHS, there is no better way to experience life in our school than through a visit and I look forward to welcoming you to Shrewsbury High School very soon.

Darren Payne, Head

Shrewsbury High School has been educating girls in the heart of Shrewsbury since 1885, our school is literally built into the historic Town Walls. We welcome pupils aged 4-18 and we were created to put girls first, always. We are the only all-through, all-girls school in Shropshire and as leaders in educating girls, we offer exceptional teaching, tailored to the way girls learn. We encourage them to experiment, have a go, be brave. This is aided by small class sizes, expert pastoral care, collaboration and teamwork.

Our wonderful location, in the heart of this creative and forward-thinking town gives our pupils unique opportunities to learn from, and contribute to, their local community.  Being the town school offers our family of big sisters and little sisters a stimulating environment in which to grow and learn.

Shrewsbury High School has a proud history as pioneers, preparing students for an ever-changing world and through initiatives such as our Period X life skills programme, our Ready Steady Girl initiative at Juniors and the GDST Space Tech and LEAD Diplomas, our students are become confident and well-rounded individuals at school and in society.

Shrewsbury High School is part of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST), the leading network of girls’ schools in the country.  As part of the GDST, our girls have a wealth of opportunities at their fingertips that individual schools would be unable to offer, via collaboration between schools and across our alumnae network.  We are the only GDST school in the area, and as such, we are able to bring all the advantages of this powerful network to our girls.
